Spindler: Garden brunch + Hollandaise heaven

I go to Spindler to, in effect, get out of Kreuzberg. At Spindler (a fine-dining brasserie) you can sit at a delicate bistro table under a striped awning overlooking the canal (sometimes fully sun-drenched) and have yourself the kind of breakfast you can expect in London (though French options are on offer, it’s not exactly Paris).

Spindler caters to a more bourgeois crowd than your typical hipster brunch spot, or for that matter your Späti breakfast of cigarettes and Fritz-kola. Make sure to reserve ahead.

Choose from an array of Benedicts (Florentines, Rosalines, Royales…), or go English breakfast, croque madame, buttermilk pancakes—they’ve got the full spread. I always go for a Benedict because they have a lovely house-made gluten free bread to replace the English muffin. It’s not the best Benedict of my life, but their hollandaise is highly dependable—and, let’s face it—in Berlin, that’s not nothing. The French Toast looks amazing, but I can’t confirm. The lunch menu is also available at brunch, although I’ve never tasted it. Do recommend the Spindler Spritz (aperol, vermouth, crémant, + ginger) for a delightful deviation from your standard boozy brunch cocktail.

The service is always friendly, if occasionally a bit scattered and delayed. I’m never sure who my server is, but what does it matter on a summery Sunday, spritz in hand, sun on my face? At Spindler, you can while away the morning in style.
